Q: Does Redwood Hill Farm still sell goat milk?

A: As of September 14, 2012 we no longer sell our fresh bottled goat milk. Because goat milk production is seasonal, there are times of the year when we have less fresh milk than others. Coupled with the fact that our goat milk yogurt & kefir are very popular, we have decided to discontinue bottling our fresh milk. You may wish to enjoy our delicious and nutritious Redwood Hill Farm Goat Milk Kefir in place of the milk; many people use our kefir on their cereal, over fruit, and in their smoothies. Q: Why are goat milk and goat milk products whiter in color?

A: Goats convert all of the carotene in their diet to Vitamin A so their milk and cream are pure white.

Q: I've heard that goat milk and goat milk products are better for you. Why?

A: Goat milk has smaller fat particles which make it easier to digest. Goat milk is often referred to as "naturally homogenized," since hardly any cream rises to the top.

Q: I'm allergic to cow milk products. Can I use products made from goat milk?

A: Most people allergic to cow milk products or those who are lactose intolerant can enjoy goat milk products. The lactose or protein in the milk is what causes an allergic reaction or intolerance. Although goat milk has lactose and protein, their makeup is different and doesn't cause problems for most people.

Q: Why is goat milk recommended for babies or people with digestive problems?

A: Goat milk is recommended for babies because it's easy to digest and non-allergenic. Its natural buffering qualities make goat milk beneficial for babies or people with ulcers and other stomach problems.

Q: Do you make low or non-fat goat milk products?

A: No. Goat milk is naturally lower in fat and cholesterol than cow milk, and we believe in consuming products in their most natural form with the least amount of processing. Low and non-fat goat milk products are not commonly available because the equipment needed is expensive and most goat milk producers are small family farms.

Q: Why are goat milk products more expensive to buy than cow milk products?

A: There are several reasons:

  • Goat dairies do not receive government price supports or subsidies to offset the cost of production.
  • Milking goats is more labor intensive than milking cows since it takes 10 goats to produce the same amount of milk as one cow.
  • Most goat dairies are family farms without the economy of scale of large, corporate farms.
