A Family Farm Since 1968
|
In this day and age of advancing technology and mass production there is a unique dairy that is different from the rest. Located among the picturesque redwoods of western Sonoma County, about sixty miles north of San Francisco, Redwood Hill Farm is a small family farm that has been producing delicious, award-winning goat milk products for over thirty five years. Many people consider our goat milk products to be the best tasting that they have ever tried.
The Story of Redwood Hill Farm
The year 2007 marks the thirty-ninth year Jennifer Lynn Bice has been milking, breeding, and loving dairy goats at Redwood Hill Farm.
Beginning in 1968 when her parents decided to build their grade A goat dairy in Sonoma County, California; as the eldest of ten children Jennifer was an integral part of this family business launched to provide fresh goat milk to the public. Ten years later Jennifer assumed ownership of Redwood Hill Farm with partner Steven Schack and began to expand the business, both in the diversity of goat milk products and the dairy goat breeding program. From the beginning, promoting the benefits of goat milk products while developing a genetics program of excellence has been a top priority and has positioned Redwood Hill Farm at the forefront of the industry.
The herd continues to be exhibited at major shows and fairs and continues to win awards at the national level, holding National Champions in four of the five breeds. As well as furnish stock to dairy goat breeders across North and South America, for the past 29 years Jennifer has served as a dairy goat judge throughout the United States and Canada. In addition Jennifer holds the distinct honor of being selected to judge the American Dairy Goat Association National Show five times.
Are We Organic?
While we're not currently able to obtain all of the organically grown feed ingredients that would enable us to label our goat milk products "certified organic"; we use organic feeds when available. Like dairy cattle, our dairy goats are fed the finest quality hay. We feed a mixture of alfalfa and bean hay. We also feed a mixture of grain that is free of antibiotics, preservatives or chemical additives. The grain is not genetically modified. We do not believe in using hormones such as BST to increase milk production. We use medication only if necessary to save an animal's life; and if ever used, the milk from the treated doe is discarded for a long period of time to insure that no drugs ever enter the human food chain. We believe in a natural approach to animal husbandry and our dairy goats are raised "free range" and humanely.
Because we want our products to be as natural and unprocessed as possible, we do not standardise or homogenize our milk. Our products are free of sugar, coloring, preservatives, stabilizers or powdered milk. Redwood Hill Farm goat milk yogurt has won numerous gold medals. It has a "European-style" velvety smooth and delicate texture and is uniquely delicious. In national and international competitions, Cheesemaker Jennifer Bice's unique, delicious cheeses have consistently been honored with gold medals and first place awards. All of Redwood Hill Farm's delicious cheeses and yogurt are kosher certified and suitable for vegetarians.
One taste will convince anyone that our products are different. Redwood Hill Farm, a different kind of dairy, is committed to producing the best tasting, least processed goat milk products available anywhere.
First Certified Humane Goat Dairy in the United States
Today the herd at Redwood Hill Farm Grade A Goat Dairy numbers 350 animals comprised of four of the major breeds of dairy goats in the U.S.: Nubian, Alpine, Saanen, and LaMancha. Redwood Hill Farm is the first goat dairy in the United States qualified to use the Humane Farm Animal Care's (HFAC) "Certified Humane Raised and Handled" label. Unveiled in May 2003, the "Certified Humane Raised and Handled" label is now being used by 31 companies. The label assures consumers that a meat, poultry, egg or dairy product has been produced according to HFAC's precise standards for humane farm animal treatment. Animals must receive a nutritious diet free of antibiotics or hormones and must be raised with shelter, resting areas and space that are sufficient to support natural behavior.
Goats, unlike sheep or cattle, do not tolerate rain or wind, therefore adequate shelter must be provided at all times to protect from inclement weather. Being social, gregarious animals, goats must not be kept in isolation, but housed within sight or sound of goats or other animals. Milking and shearing/clipping procedures must also meet HFAC standards.
Each goat at Redwood Hill Farm is registered with the American Dairy Goat Association and collectively have gained recognition for their milk production and conformation of type. In addition, each animal is selected for its excellence of milk flavor, resulting in the production of premium goat milk yogurt in six flavors and a unique line of goat milk artisan cheeses.
An Artisan Cheese Pioneer
Jennifer recently returned to France for the International Conference on Goats. It was an excellent opportunity to glean information regarding the dairy goat industry from a global perspective as well as experience dairying and cheese production in the country that continues to lead the world in the development of fine goat milk cheese.
Having established herself as an entrepreneur as well as a pioneer in the artisan cheese movement in California, Jennifer is often sought out to speak about the tradition and practice of farmstead cheese making and the business of dairying in the United States. Most recently she was invited to New York City by Slow Food USA to be a participant in the Slow Food USA "RAFT" project, contributing to a production protocol for raw milk cheese production in the United States. Managed by Slow Food USA, RAFT (Renewing America's Food Traditions), is a consortium of seven food, agriculture, conservation and education organizations that have come together to identify and restore America's endangered foods.
For the future of our society and the health of our environment.
Working in agriculture and calling Sonoma County our home since the mid 1960's, Redwood Hill Farm is proud to be "Partners in Conservation" with the Sonoma Land Trust and proud members of Co-op America.
Sonoma County, California is blessed with a dazzling variety of natural and working lands. Our familiar landscapes add immeasurably to the quality of our lives. Rocky coastlines, redwood forests, scenic farmsteads, vital wildlife habitats all enrich our experience of this place. Since 1976 the Sonoma Land Trust has permanently protected nearly 15,000 acres through working directly with willing landowners who act voluntarily to keep their lands intact. Because land trusts are local, private, and non-profit, the Sonoma Land Trust can act quickly and flexibly to address landowners' goals and achieve public benefit. They collaborate with landowners and government agencies to protect Sonoma County open lands. Learn more about the Sonoma Land Trust at www.sonomalandtrust.org
